My journey to get to this point, starting my NQT year, has been both a varied and interesting one… or well at least it’s interesting to me! I always knew that I wanted to teach, it was something that had piqued my interest but, if I am honest, I didn’t want to jump straight into teaching after doing my degree. So after three years studying for my degree in Marketing with Geography I went off to work for a holiday design firm.

Six months later, unhappy with my job, bored of being trapped behind a desk and dealing with work politics and simply what I was doing day in and day out, I eagerly took a redundancy package after accepting that I wasn’t cut out to be working nine to five (sorry Dolly!) and applied for a position on a GTP scheme.

I was, so very lucky, to be employed by a school who had trained teachers on the GTP route for the last five years, so were very much in the knowhow. Sadly there wasn’t a position for me at the end of my training year and with the change in Government and education being kind of up in the air, I found myself without a job. Unphased (read: at a loss until I realised sitting in my room wasn’t going to achieve anything) at the stumbling block I decided that I had always wanted to get my Masters in Education eventually so why bother doing it in three years (like most normal people) and instead do it in one.

Which is where you find me right now! Finishing up my module essays, writing my Dissertation which is due in October and I’m thankfully employed by a Grammar in the South East, along with another NQT who I’m looking forward to working with!

My specialism is Geography, I could wax lyrical about the subject but I don’t want to get off topic, so I’ll save that for another time! Anyway it’s not just Geography that interests me; Citizenship, PSHE and Sex Education, amongst many other aspects of teaching and learning are all areas that I love to learn and teach about.

This year I’ll be teaching KS3, KS4, KS5 including GCSE, AS  and A2 and IB, along with having a shared sixth form tutor group.

This blog though? This was sparked by a random conversation over twitter which has grown and grown to become something that I am amazed, proud and so very humbled to be a part of. To come together, essentially strangers all with one key thing in common, a love of teaching, and share our experiences, our highs and lows, advice, words of wisdom and support. Well I think it is amazing. So I can only hope that you find what you are looking for here and this becomes a place to know that you aren’t the only one going through this intense and exciting first year of our careers.

So that’s me, callmemissh; Geography teacher, geek, NQT and all round education enthusiast.
